Depth & Shells

Choosing the right sizes for your kit is a crucial element in defining your sound. To help you choose the sizes that create the sound you’re after, consider the following information:

The drum diameter helps determine the pitch of the tone, and the depth determines the fullness and length of the tone. That being said, there are some things to take into consideration when choosing shells that create the tone you want: our thinner and softer shells create optimal tone with more traditional sizes, while our thicker shells made from hardwood should ideally be used for more modern applications.

We offer our house made Gladstone shells in 10″, 12″, 13″, 14″, 16″, 18″, 20″, 22″, 24″, and 26″ diameters and a variety of depths. Favoring the classic sizes, we’ve learned that they can be applied to modern musical applications, or also help you achieve that vintage sound for which you’ve been searching.

Bearing Edges

Choose one bearing edge, or mix and match from several in our custom shop to create a unique tone for each drum in your set. Each bearing edges is hand sanded 4 times with various degrees of sand paper and is finished off with a secret sauce.

Oaklawn

Bill’s rendition of the edge cut in Oaklawn, Illinois in the 1960s. This is a very rounded edge full of warmth. The Oaklawn edge consists of mirrored inside and outside cuts that are slightly rounded-over to help open up the tone and add a longer decay without sacrificing clarity.

Los Angeles

This is another favorite vintage edge inspired by edges cut in Los Angeles in the 1970s. It rounds over from the outside of the shell and cuts sharp from the reinforcement rings to the inside of the shell. The L.A. edge allows the drum to speak with warmth and a quick decay and is found on our 12th & Vine drum line.

Bread & Butter

We call this the Bread & Butter edge because of its versatile tone. It works well for drummers playing anything from Jazz, Fusion, Rock, or Metal and is featured on our Gladstone line. On the 7 ply Maple shell we use a back cut on the outer two plies of the shell and an inside cut the lands on the 5th ply. This edge tunes up quickly and creates a wide tuning range.

Full Contact

An edge cut in Brooklyn, New York in the 1960s that is a Jazz lover’s delight, and an indie staple today. Our Full Contact edge is featured on the Player Date line and provides warm, round tones with lots of body, control, and a subdued attack.
